Complete treatment of leg ulcers

Leg ulcer may be caused by venous or arterial insufficiency of the lower leg. Symptoms, signs and treatment of lesions differs depending on their cause. Treatment of chronic leg ulcer is, usually, long and conservative. Patients quality of life is greatly affected and they are dependent on daily dressings and drugs against pain. Basically, a leg ulcer can be categorized as incapacitating disease.

Scientific research in the field revealed the importance of fostering the formation of vascular tissue and skin by drug and physical means locally applied . Thus, the research for my doctoral thesis, I demonstrated by clinical results obtained, that chronic wound healing period can be shortened significantly (50%) by combining local conservative treatment (Galvanic Pulsatile Stimulation) and surgical treatment (free skin graft).

1. Stage of conservative treatment.

  • secretion of the wound is analyzed in the laboratory. Depending on the result, antibiotics are prescribed.
  • local abundant baths only with saline, as studies have shown that solutions of Chloramine and Betadine are toxic for granular tissue.
  • a treatment is applied 2x/24 h with WoundEl issuing Galvanic pulsatile stimulation through sterile electrodes.
  • bandages between sessions are with saline

Patient is following that treatment for 3-4 weeks in outpatient treatment to grow enough granulation tissue. This moment is identified by your doctor. After this treatment, small and superficial ulcers will close. Large deep and old ulcers - will be ready for next step: surgery.

2. Surgery

This treatment will be performed only by a doctor of Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery. Even if i is a simple surgical method, free skin grafting of ulcers require specific preparation of the wound during surgery and the use of a specific device: electric Dermatom.

3. The postsurgery recovery period takes 14-21 days.

During this period the patient remains hospitalized and still apply Galvanic puldstl stimulations to stimulate "catching" skin grafts in a proportion as high as possible
